Dear Mr/Ms [MP’s Last Name],
I am writing to seek a meeting with you to discuss proposed laws affecting faith-based schools in Australia.
[A sentence or two to introduce yourself and your community (church, mosque, school, etc).]
You may be aware that the Labor government has tasked the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) with recommending changes to discrimination laws affecting faith-based education in Australia. Despite the government’s mandate for the ALRC to ensure that faith-based schools can “continue to build a community of faith”, the proposed reforms in the ALRC’s Consultation Paper (released on 27th Jan 2023) would, in fact, undermine the ability of faith-based schools to maintain being a community of faith.
I’d like to request a meeting with you in person as an opportunity for you to meet and hear firsthand from parents in your electorate who send their children to faith-based schools. We’d like to have a conversation with you about why we choose to send our children to these schools and why it’s important for these schools to be able to teach and operate in accordance with our faith.
The faith foundations of our schools contribute positively to the education and character growth of all students, regardless of their faith or background, and we hope to provide you with a better understanding of what these schools are like and our concern for their future.
We would be grateful if a member of your staff could get in touch to organise an appropriate time.
